Synopsis:
Padma Nadir Majhi is perhaps one of the finest films ever made in Bengali cinema. The care and love with which Manik Bandyopadhyay's great novel has been translated into cinema is apparent in every frame. The detail work is fantastic, and the lilting language of the fishermen rings in your ears much after the film is over.

I love the music of this film, in particular the boatmen's songs that are so beautifully woven into the fabric of the film. The direction is matched by some wonderful acting by Raisul Islam Asad. He brings Kabir to life, not just by the language (He was the advisor for the regional language usage) but by his body movents and gestures. Ably seconding him are Rupa Ganguly and Utpal Dutt.

Cinematography is great, but is marred by some poor quality color stock. The beautiful sunsets over the Padma would perhaps have been even more gorgeous if Ghose had access to better technology that was available in 1991, but was not often used by filmmakers of Bengal.

Overall a wonderful film. One that i have watched again and again and have been swayed by the pathos and shared the emotions of the fisherfolk of the Padma.
